As Artificial Intelligence technology becomes more prevalent, questions are arising for how the technology will affect modern workplaces now and in the coming years.

While executives are trying to figure out the best way to apply the technology to improve their businesses, workers are afraid that bots will shortly be replacing their jobs.

Contrary to the bleak picture painted by critics, a new IDC study of more than 1,000 organisations worldwide shows that AI will be in the workplace “sooner than we think”, and will have a positive impact on productivity, revenues, and job creation.

From 2017 to 2021, the Salesforce-sponsored study predicts that AI-powered CRM activities will boost business revenue by $1.1 trillion, and create more than 800,000 direct jobs and 2 million indirect jobs globally, surpassing those lost to AI-driven automation.

Alphabet Executive Chairman also believes that the future of AI will enhance rather than replace jobs.

“So what that tells me is that your future is you with a computer, not you replaced by a computer,” Schmidt said.

Convinced there will be a shortage of jobs; the exec implored businesses to fill positions with “people plus computers.”

“The computers will make people smarter,” he continued. “If you make the people smarter, their wages go up. … And the number of jobs go up, not down.”
